The problem

After updating a Typo3 installation the language in the backend is not properly selected anymore. This can be solved as follows:

  1. Logon to the Typo3 backend
  2. Check that the current user has assigned the correct language
  3. Click on "Extensions" -> Language packages
  4. Edit the Typo3 backend user & select the language you want to use (if not yet selected)
  5. Delete the folder /typo3conf/l10n with all the files and directories in it (e.g. in a console)
  6. Delete all the content of the folder /typo3temp (e.g. in a console)
  7. Select the desired language in the Typo3 extension manager (again)
  8. Select "Refresh library" in the typo3 backend
  9. log off / log on
