The goal: In order to optimize Microsoft Windows 7 for the usage with SSD hard disks you should apply the following settings:

  1. Disable SuperFetch/PreFetch
    --> click START and enter cmd
    --> now press CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER to start the console with administrator privileges.
    --> Now enter sc config "SysMain" start= disabled)
  2. Disable ReadyBoost
    --> Click here to see how this can be done
  3. Enable Device Initiated Power Management (DIPM) and Host Initiated Link Power Management (HIPM)
    --> Execute this REG-File: Add_AHCI_Link_Power_Management.reg
    --> Use this one to remove DIPM and HIPM again: Remove_AHCI_Link_Power_Management_Option.reg
  4. Disable automatic disk defragmentation
    --> click START and enter dfrgui.exe
    --> confirm dialog or enter password when prompted for admin privileges)
    --> click on the button "turn on schedule" and turn off the defragmentation schedule

If you own an Intel SSD drive (X25, SSD-320, SSD-510 etc.) you can download the SSD toolbox software from the Intel Webpage. With this software you can easily apply firmware updates and make some of the above described optimizations automatically:
